What Is Rizz? Meaning, Origin, and How to Get It
Rizz is slang for charisma: the skill of being easy and fun to talk to. What the word means, where it comes from, what it looks like in real texts, and how to build it.
Rizz is slang for charisma. It is how easy and fun you are to talk to. If people lean in when you speak, you have rizz. If conversations with you die after three messages, you do not. Yet.
The word is everywhere now. It spread across English-speaking internet culture, and it also landed in youth slang in Germany and other European countries. People use the English word as it is.
Rizz is not a gift. It is a set of habits you can train.
Where the word comes from
“Rizz” is a short form of “charisma”. Take the middle of the word, and you get rizz. It became popular online around 2022, mostly through streamers and short videos. Oxford University Press then picked it as its Word of the Year for 2023.
You will also see it as a verb: “to rizz someone up” means to charm them. And “W rizz” or “L rizz” means a good or bad attempt.
What rizz looks like in a text
Rizz is not a pickup line. It is how you handle a normal message. Same moment, two replies.
The first reply is polite and empty. The second one is playful, specific, and gives her something fun to answer. That small difference is rizz.
Common mistakes
Mistake 01Copying lines
A memorized line is not rizz.
Lines from the internet sound like lines from the internet. People notice fast. Rizz is reacting to what the other person just said. We wrote about this in why rehearsed practice makes you boring.
Mistake 02Interview mode
Question after question after question.
“What do you do? Where are you from? What music do you like?” That is a form, not a conversation. Share something, tease a little, then ask. See why she left you on read for the full breakdown.
Mistake 03Trying too hard
Needing every message to land.
Real rizz is relaxed. If one joke fails, you move on. Nervous over-explaining is the fastest way to lose the vibe.
How to get more rizz
Be specific. “Cool” and “nice” give nothing. Pick one detail from her message and play with it.
Be playful. Light teasing and humor show you are comfortable. Keep it kind.
Read the energy. Short replies mean slow down. Long, excited replies mean match it.
Leave a hook. End with something she can easily answer or build on.
